Lake Lure

I know what you're thinking...this place looks familiar, like maybe the kind of place that Baby wouldn't be put in a corner?

Well it is! I went to Lake Lure on Sunday and it is actually one of the places that Dirty Dancing was filmed. Can't you just picture it?

Sunday

Employment!

I had a pretty awesome week this week. The biggest news came on Thursday when I was offered a job at RiverLink as Assistant Volunteer Coordinator. The non-profit looks amazing and the location is even greater: Asheville, NC--which is quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the country!

RiverLink is focused on the revitalization of the French Broad River Basin, both economically and environmentally. There current project is to build a sculpture park in place of an old electric blue industrial building along the river.

I can't wait to get started in September!

Monday

Almost Famous

Stark ARThology

Conquered!

Climbed the tallest peak east of the Mississippi yesterday. A mountain they call Mt. Mitchell! (perfect for father's day).

The drive turned out to be a lot longer than I expected (about 2 hours), so with the 4 hour hike it turned into an all day event. It felt good to reach the top though, and even better to get home and take a nap.

Sunday

Overheard on the Firefly Twilight Tour

Grandma to her 5 year old granddaughter: I'm going to run back to the car, you stay with the group.

Granddaughter: Okay, but if you get lost and can't find us, just use your compass.

Friday

BOWLING NIGHT

Imagine with me, if you will, that you walk into Lucky Stryke Bowling Alley in Brevard, NC expecting some COLLEGE NIGHT discounts, only to find that KEVIN--the annoying man behind the counter--has never heard of College Night (even though it's all over their website) and instead charges you full price for each game.

LAME.

Thursday

WOCC

We started our summer nature program, Woodsy Owl Curiosity Club, today. Laurie and I taught some preeeeeeeeeettty cute 4-7 year olds about their 5 senses, went on a nature hike and did a craft (cardboard binoculars). Success!

Next week's topic: THE LIFE CYCLE OF PLANTS

Wednesday

Skinny Dip Falls

Since the last entry had nothing to do with "ROCKIN THE CRADLE", here's a little something about FOREST LIFE.

On my day off, I was told about this hidden treasure called "skinny dip falls". It's a three-tiered waterfall, known only to the locals and doesn't show up in any of the travel books. I swam in the water (in my bathing suit) and laid out on a rock to dry, it was pretty much IDEAL. I think word has spread about it though, because it got pretty crowded in the afternoon hours.

Recovered

So a couple weeks ago I discovered that when you drag something to the trash on your computer it doesn't actually delete until you EMPTY the trash. This was kind of a HUGE discovery because my computer is 5 years old and I had never emptied my trash (5,000 items were in there). So when I finally emptied it last week, I was feeling really great about all the space I had cleared up. BUT NOT SO FAST- when I went to use itunes it showed up that atleast 100 of my song files "couldn't be located". BLAST. I was pretty upset that I had lost some much good music, but thanks to some guidance from my technologically-advanced-brother, I was able to download a program that let me load music from my ipod back onto my computer. Now, my itunes library is whole again!

Saturday

Kids Fish Day

Check out this RAFFLE TABLE.

Not only did we give away some really good prizes, but I also became an expert fisherwoman--bagged me a BLUEGILL!

Friday

The death of the trivia thursday tradition.

We did so horribly in trivia last night that it was just plain NOT FUN. I knew one answer and it was Mystery Science Theater 3000 (thank you Kevin and Jason).

Next Thursday we're going BOWLING.

Thursday

My life as a CRAFTER

I've spent the majority of this week doing arts and crafts (which suits me just fine) but it's a bit odd when your title is environmental educator.

Here's a recap:

LUMBERJACK. Did you know that there is such a thing as a pro-lumberjack meet and that we are hosting it in June? WEIRD.

I came into work yesterday to find 3 shades of poster board on my desk and a note asking if I would make a BEST GARDEN award. (ummm. YES!)

Tuesday

Delicious

SHOUT OUT to Andrea for being my bffe (best friend for eternity) and bloggysitter!

I'm back from my two day hiatus and family visit and I'm here to share with you the most memorable part: SUGAR CANE. We went into a market to buy fresh strawberries and came out chewing on a delicious tree. It's actually in the grass family, but anyway, can you believe a whole stalk was going for $2? SO GOOD and it doubles as a sugar flavored toothbrush!
